BUREAU VERITAS EXPERT JOINS IAQM WEBINAR DISCUSSION

Aug. 8 2023

Jamie Clayton, Technical Director for Air Quality at Bureau Veritas, was showcasing his expertise when he participated in a webinar hosted by the Institute of Air Quality Management (IAQM).

Jamie was joined by Karen Barrass, author of the CANZ report, for a discussion as part of the IAQM’s webinar titled ‘Air Quality And Climate Change: Opportunities And Interactions’, on 2nd August.

It is the latest example of his thought-leadership work with the IAQM and other leading bodies, positioning Jamie and the Bureau Veritas team right at the forefront of evolving issues and regulatory changes linked to air quality.

He also led the drafting of an article which was published by the IAQM in June, exploring what air quality can learn from net zero and how we can all help raise the public image of air quality.

My work with the IAQM helps put me at the heart of key conversations around air quality and right now that is inevitably linked to net zero.

“As a member of the IAQM/air quality community our bread-and-butter work involves completing monitoring surveys, constructing dispersion models and drafting impact assessment reports to ensure development is undertaken responsibly. We make sure our findings are robust, conservative, defensible and worst-case. Despite this catalogue of well-meaning reports however it sometimes feels as though air quality concerns are not provided the exposure they should be.

“Net zero enjoys a far greater public profile. As a concept it is bold, ambitious, and positive, something people naturally want to be. It has celebrity backing –David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg to name a few.

“Yes, there is much debate around how realistic and achievable it is, but at least it is resulting in action and change. The question now is ‘how can we galvanise air quality, so it is also a badge people want to wear?’ Because improving air quality really matters to public health, just as net zero matters within the context of the ongoing climate challenge.

“There’s a lot we can learn from net zero. I was pleased to be able to get involved with the webinar and talk to Karen Barrass to help explore that potential.”
