Power Press & Process Machinery Inspections

PUWER INSPECTION & ASSESSMENT

MAINTAINING THE SAFETY OF POWER PRESS AND PROCESS MACHINERY IN COMPLIANCE WITH PUWER

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) place obligations on employers to ensure that work equipment is suitable for intended use – that it is safe, correctly installed, well maintained, only used by persons with adequate information, instruction and training, and accompanied by appropriate health and safety measures, such as protective devices and controls.

Bureau Veritas offers an experienced team of inspection engineers and H&S experts, working nationwide, to support you in achieving compliance.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PUWER INSPECTION?

  • Achieve and maintain compliance and reduce the risk of financial penalty
  • Ensure safety across operations
  • Improve availability of equipment and identify faults earlier
  • Enable better planning of maintenance and repair programmes to spread costs

WHAT ARE THE PUWER REGULATIONS?

PUWER places duties on people and companies who own, operate, or have control over work equipment, as well as employers whose employees use work equipment, whether owned by them or not.

The Health & Safety Executive defines work equipment as ‘any machinery, appliance, apparatus, tool, or installation for use at work (whether exclusively or not). This includes equipment which employees provide for their own use at work’. It covers machinery, appliances, apparatus, tools and more.

WHAT IS A PUWER ASSESSMENT?

A PUWER assessment identifies that the work equipment provided is suitable for its intended tasks and can be safely used without putting any persons at risk. It must be carried out by a competent person, and some equipment may also have additional requirements, for example lifting equipment under LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998).

Our specialist team can advise further on specific frequencies and individual requirements.

WHAT IS A PUWER INSPECTION?

Regulation 6 of PUWER specifies the requirement to complete suitable inspection and maintenance on all work equipment, where deterioration will significantly increase the risk to users. A PUWER inspection can be either visual or a full system check with an element of testing and must be carried out by a competent person.

The frequency of PUWER inspections depends on the type of equipment and the frequency identified in the PUWER Assessment / Risk Assessment.
