VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN FOOD LABELLING
Demand for vegan and vegetarian products continues to rise, particularly amongst younger consumers seeking healthier, more ethical and more environmentally friendly products.
With greater awareness of food origins and traceability too, it is important to demonstrate confidence to shoppers through recognisable vegan and vegetarian labels they can trust.
As experts in the food sector, Bureau Veritas works with food businesses to help them stand out from the competition through trusted vegan and vegetarian labelling.
WHY DOES VERIFICATION OF VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN LABELLING MATTER?
Consumers are increasingly looking to buy from brands they can trust, particularly on key issues such as vegan and vegetarian food production.
Companies can only demonstrate traceability with confidence if they have control of their supply chain and internal processes, and they are totally transparent in their communications regarding production practices.
Producing vegetarian and vegan food is also a way for businesses to help reduce their environmental impact and work towards decarbonisation objectives, but any environmental claims must be verified.
HOW DOES BUREAU VERITAS SUPPORT WITH VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN FOOD LABELLING?
Legal regulations around vegan and vegetarian claims on food still lack sector-wide harmonisation. As an independent third-party with specialist expertise in the food industry, we work with producers to help standardise their supply chain audits and substantiate product claims in a recognised, verifiable and consistent manner.
Our experts have created a universal standard to define and certify food products suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
Certified Vegan is Bureau Veritas’s global certification system for products suitable for vegans and vegetarians. With this certification, manufacturers and processing industries can provide a guarantee to customers and end users that their product complies with pre-defined vegan and vegetarian criteria and requirements.
- Covers both vegan and vegetarian products
- Provides companies with an optional logo to be featured on products as a seal of approval
- Gives external verification of control and transparency throughout the supply chain
- Includes laboratory testing that gives companies an additional option to cement product claims
- Demonstrates trust to customers and end users
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE BUREAU VERITAS CERTIFIED VEGAN SCHEME?
Our standard defines vegan foods as those that do not contain products of animal origin, including ingredients (such as additives, carriers, flavours and enzymes) and processing aids. Vegetarian foods meet the same requirements as vegan foods except that components including milk, eggs, honey, beeswax and lanolin can be added or used in their production and treatment.
Bureau Veritas experts will assess a product’s conformity against the required standard through an onsite audit, comprehensive checks against technical regulations and sampling and analysis of products in one of our global laboratories.
Once the assessment is completed, we provide a report which either identifies non-conformities and any potential areas of concern, or which confirms certification and includes the option of a vegan/vegetarian label.
