Supporting Ex-Services Personnel

Jan. 29 2020

Bureau Veritas has worked closely with the Armed Forces and relevant charities for a number of years to help support the transition of ex-services personnel into civilian roles.

We are proud to have built a structured strategic partnership with these organisations, which offers new career opportunities, practical work experience and training opportunities for those leaving the armed forces.

As part of this, we are proud to have been an early employer adopter in signing the Armed Forces Covenant and received Gold Award in the Employer Recognition Scheme in 2016 - all of which supports serving personnel, service leavers, veterans, and their families.

Success in numbers

In 2019 we relaunched our Forces Attraction Programme for mechanical inspection and as a result, we recruited 80% more ex-services personnel than we did in 2018. In total, more than 20% of our mechanical workforce have served their country before starting a career with Bureau Veritas.

Kate Bugler, resourcing strategic projects lead, said: “We recognise the challenges that people face when they leave the armed forces and that’s why we have developed this strategic programme. Often it can be hard to gain visibility of relevant, enticing roles with companies like Bureau Veritas, but in reality it is a fantastic fit for both sides.

“For ex-services personnel, we offer the opportunity for structured training, a programme of development and a wealth of career opportunities in a supporting, rewarding work environment. And as an employer, we appreciate the transferrable skills and personal attributes that those leaving the armed forces can bring. Given our current forces alumni, support for recent leavers is not hard to find.

“Our ex-services employees have helped to raise standards in our mechanical division in particular, bringing new skills and alignment with our core values of trust, responsibility, ambition and humility, openness and inclusivity. All of this will help us to continue delivering service excellence to our clients and truly leave our mark on society.”

A seamless transition

One employee who took advantage of our programme for ex-service personnel said:

“Transitioning from the military into a civilian job with Bureau Veritas was seamless. My interviewer was an ex-Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer, which put me at ease immediately as I knew he’d been where I am now. And the amount of ex-military I encountered throughout training was a welcome sight, be it new starters in the same boat as me or the trainers themselves, and this allowed me to concentrate on the training in hand.”

“I now have a generous salary, company car, fantastic pension and a host of benefits to choose from each year. Saying yes to the job offer was a no brainer; a fresh start into a secure career, recommended by a fellow REME Veteran who is doing the same job.”
