What is an Arc Flash?
An arc flash is a dangerous electrical explosion or discharge that can cause severe injuries or fatalities. Conducting an Arc Flash Risk Assessment (AFRA) is essential for ensuring safety and compliance with regulations.
An arc flash occurs when an electrical current travels through the air between conductors, resulting in a bright light, intense heat, loud noise, pressure wave, and toxic gas release. It can cause severe burns, blindness, hearing damage, respiratory damage, blunt force trauma, and death.
Arc flash incidents release energy exceeding 19,000°C

Bureau Veritas
Many organisations lack the in-house expertise to model fault currents or validate their specialist PPE requirements. This can lead to gaps in safety assessments. Our impartial assessments ensure that safety is the top priority, providing a thorough evaluation that goes beyond standard supplier recommendations.
How Will an Arc Flash Risk Assessment Help?
An AFRA assesses the danger associated with arc flash and is a requirement under the HASAWA and EAWR. It helps identify areas where the risk of arc flash exceeds safety thresholds and provides labels for equipment to communicate the risk to electrical engineers.
Independent compliance solutions under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HASAWA 1974) & the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 (EAWR 1989)

What Happens After an Arc Flash Risk Assessment Has Been Completed?
Following the completion of an AFRA, a report detailing areas of high risk will be issued. Labels will be provided for each piece of equipment to inform engineers of the arc flash risk.
Bureau Veritas can also support by creating or auditing procedures for managing arc flash risk, following the '4P's': Predict, Prevent, Process, and Protect. *
