BUREAU VERITAS SUPPORTS ROLLS-ROYCE SMR AHEAD OF ISO 19443 CERTIFICATION

Aug. 22 2024

An in-depth certification audit by Bureau Veritas specialists has helped Rolls-Royce SMR to achieve certification to the ISO 19443 standard, demonstrating its commitment to quality management in the nuclear sector.

Rolls-Royce SMR is a small modular reactor being developed by the Rolls-Royce company in the United Kingdom to deliver a low cost, clean energy solution.

Bureau Veritas was one of the first organisations in the UK to achieve UKAS accreditation for ISO 19443 through a pilot accreditation programme, and we are already supporting organisations in the nuclear sector with a range of certification services.

Working closely with the Rolls-Royce SMR team, our dedicated Certification team assessed the company’s quality management system in line with the requirements of the sector-specific standard.

By following the best practice principles found in ISO 9001 (which was achieved by Rolls-Royce SMR in 2023), ISO 19443 certification helps standardise requirements throughout the nuclear supply chain, providing improved quality, time and costs.

“Gaining this certification demonstrates that we have the appropriate systems, tools, and specialists in place to deliver our mission whilst ensuring nuclear safety is at the forefront of everything we do.
“The certification process was a detailed in-depth assessment of our management system which recorded a number of areas of good practice, and this achievement is a validation of the excellent work and outstanding efforts of all involved.”

Sammy Tweddle, Energy and Engineering Director at Bureau Veritas, said: “ISO 19443 helps organisations to demonstrate their commitment to safety and quality, measure progress towards continuous improvement and drive competitive advantage.

“As one of the first organisations in the UK to achieve UKAS accreditation, we’re working with organisations including Rolls-Royce SMR to help meet the requirements of the standard, identify any gaps in their management system and audit the business to the required standard. We also offer training resources to help improve knowledge across key areas of your business.”
