What is Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)?

Non-Destructive Testing encompasses a range of advanced inspection techniques used to evaluate the integrity of materials, components, and structures without causing damage. These methods enable organisations to identify defects, measure material thickness, and assess structural soundness whilst preserving the operational capability of assets. NDT is essential for maintaining compliance with safety regulations and extending asset lifespan across critical industries.

Our Non-Destructive Testing Solutions

SAFed boiler inspection

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) to find flaws (cracks, corrosion, wear) in boiler materials without damaging them, crucial for statutory safety checks (often every 5 years) to assess integrity, wall thickness, and weld quality. These tests identify defects in welds, tubes, and shell, ensuring compliance and preventing catastrophic failures.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Precision volumetric inspection employing high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws and measure material thickness. Our inspectors use pulse echo probes to transmit ultrasonic pulses through test specimens, with any discontinuities (such as cracks, lack of fusion, or inclusions) reflecting sound waves back to the receiver. UT provides rapid, detailed insights for inspecting welds, forgings, and structural components whilst preserving asset integrity.

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Reliable detection of surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. The process involves magnetising components and applying fine magnetic particles that cluster around defects such as cracks or seams, making them clearly visible under suitable lighting conditions. MT offers quick, dependable results for inspecting welds, structural steel, and critical components.

Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)

Versatile surface inspection technique for detecting defects in non-porous materials. We apply visible or fluorescent dye to clean component surfaces; after penetration, excess dye is removed and a developer applied, drawing out dye trapped in cracks or discontinuities. This method provides clear visual indication of flaws including cracks, seams, or porosity in welds, castings, and machined parts.

Visual Inspection (VT)

Fundamental systematic assessment conducted by certified inspectors using the naked eye or magnification tools to identify surface defects such as cracks, corrosion, misalignment, or irregularities. VT serves as the first line of defence in quality assurance, providing immediate results and determining whether advanced NDT methods are necessary for further evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

  • Q: What is the difference between destructive and non-destructive testing?

A: Non-Destructive Testing evaluates materials and components without causing damage, allowing assets to remain in service. Destructive testing involves physically altering or destroying samples to assess properties, making it unsuitable for in-service equipment.

  • Q: How often should NDT inspections be conducted?

A: Inspection frequency depends on industry regulations, asset criticality, and operating conditions. High-risk sectors such as nuclear and oil & gas typically require annual inspections, whilst manufacturing environments may follow risk-based inspection schedules aligned with ISO standards.

  • Q: Which NDT method is most suitable for my application?

A: Method selection depends on material type, defect location, and regulatory requirements. Our NDT Level 3 specialists assess your specific needs and recommend the most appropriate technique - whether Ultrasonic Testing for internal flaws, Magnetic Particle Testing for surface cracks, or Visual Inspection for preliminary assessment.

  • Q: Are your NDT services compliant with international standards?

A: Yes. Bureau Veritas UK operates under UKAS Accreditation to BS EN ISO 17020:2012 and adheres to ISO 9712, ASME, and Def Stan requirements. Our inspectors maintain current certifications through recognised schemes including PCN and CSWIP.

  • Q: Can you provide on-site NDT services?

A: Absolutely. Our mobile inspection teams are equipped to conduct comprehensive NDT services at your facility, minimising downtime and providing flexible scheduling to suit operational requirements.
