Training insights: How our focus on training helps to deliver a better service

Nov. 12 2019

When Bureau Veritas expanded its UK Training Academy in 2018 across all engineering disciplines, it was another indication of our commitment to personal development and service standards across the organisation.

Our unique facility in Peterborough has revolutionised the way in which new starters are trained across all engineering disciplines. The Training Academy combines classroom theory, workshop experience and modern assessments to enhance the training given to engineers through easier scheduling of trainees, a better trainee experience and dramatically reduced training time – all resulting in greater efficiency, improved safety and a better standard of service for our clients.

Enhanced training delivery

Delegates have access to state-of-the-art classrooms and workshops, alongside a wide range of plant and equipment for practical learning, as well as access to a coded welder for NDT and repair work. The facility represents a significant investment to help raise standards and give our engineers the platform to do their job to the best of their ability.

As a result, Bureau Veritas now leads the industry in training delivery. Our mechanical engineers undetake a rigorous training programme at the Training Academy before they carry out inspections, which can range from six to 12 weeks dependent on skill and discipline. For example, crane discipline training tends to be six weeks and pressure discipline can be up to 12 weeks.

The vast range of equipment available to engineers includes forklift trucks, scissor lifts, spider/crawler cranes in various sizes and vehicle lifts, as well as a rescue winch, various fall arrest equipment, mobile gantry, pressure pumps and chain blocks. There is also a tank for confined space training, equipment for working at heights and a climbing tower – delivering a complete solution for training across our vast range of engineering disciplines.

Driving continuous improvement in training

Shaezar Karim, Divisional Director at Bureau Veritas, said: “The Training Academy has evolved since it first opened as we have identified new technologies, new programmes and new methods of training. However, one thing has remained constant – our focus on continuous improvement to maintain the high standard of our engineer training.

“The facility now covers all engineering disciplines across the Bureau Veritas portfolio, with all the plant and equipment needed to deliver practical training alongside classroom-based learning. As a business we are extremely proud of it and the enhancements it has enabled us to make to your training delivery.

“This is industry-leading learning environment, from which we can deliver a quicker, safer and more intensive training programme when compared with other delivery methods, which benefits not only our engineers but our clients too.”
