ROYAL RECEPTION FOR OUR HEAD OF NUCLEAR

Feb. 9 2024

Bureau Veritas UK’s Energy Director Sammy Tweddle was invited to an Institute of Physics (IOP) reception attended by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh KG GCVO, in recognition of his contribution to IOP activities around net zero and the green economy.

The exclusive reception brought together senior leaders from business, academia and government, to explore and develop opportunities for collaboration to help strengthen a collective commitment to advance the green economy including its contribution from nuclear energy. It was also an opportunity to showcase state-of-the art developments in key emerging green technologies and learn about further IOP plans around green economy impact and legacy.

In December 2023, the IOP presented a report at COP28 titled Physics Powering the Green Economy, which set out the central role that physics innovation and physicists have played in realising the green economy of today, and the equally key part they will need to play in scaling up a sustainable, internationally competitive green economy in the UK and Ireland for the future.

Sammy is an elected member of the IOP Energy Committee, a special interest group which is a community of IOP members focused on aspects such as the efficient use of energy, power-generation technologies and security of supply. Sammy’s role is to be the voice of the nuclear power sector on this special interest group and help shape how the IOP community can better advance nuclear technology.

“It was huge honour to be invited to this reception as part of my contribution to the IOP Energy Committee. The presentations were both thought-provoking and insightful, showing some of the good work that’s being done across the industry to support our net zero ambitions.
“As a father, the green economy is very close to my heart. This is more than just my job – I’m increasingly conscious of how we’ll leave the world for future generations, from both an environmental and economic standpoint.”

Sammy heads up the Bureau Veritas UK Energy & Engineering Services business units, providing a diverse set of engineering services including nuclear engineering services and inspections, offshore operations, machinery, structural engineering support, lift services and non-destructive testing.
