Meeting the demands of an evolving aerospace sector

Nov. 15 2019

The aerospace sector continues to grow, with increased global demand for air travel and new technologies driving both the evolution and sustainability of aviation. It is estimated that up to 50,000 new aircraft [1] could be required in the coming years, placing increasing demands on the aerospace supply chain to provide first class products whilst achieving the lowest weight and cost possible without compromising on quality.

Ahead of the imminent update to AS 9104/1, the standard which specifically defines the requirements to manage the certification scheme within the aviation, space and defence industries, Bureau Veritas continues to work with organisations throughout the supply chain to help meet their certification requirements. We have developed a new series of Virtual Classroom training modules to further enhance our offering which will be available to all aerospace, space and defence organisations.

Requirements for certification

AS 9104/1 Requirements for Aviation, Space, and Defence Quality Management System Certification Programs was first launched in 2012 and covers certification requirements of the three main aerospace standards; AS 9100, AS9110 and AS 9120 and is due to be revised early in 2020

The AS 9104/3 standard is also being reviewed and will eventually be up-issued, this standard defines the requirements for Aviation, Space and Defence Auditor Training, Development, Competence and Authentication. This subsequent update is critical to ensure a competent and experienced team of Auditors who are able to effectively audit the Global Aerospace Supply Chain regardless of the size of the organisation.

How Bureau Veritas supports aerospace clients

Bureau Veritas has a long history of expertise in aerospace, working with clients to help them achieve and maintain certification to the three main aerospace management system standards; AS 9100, which sets out the sector’s requirements for design, development, manufacture and engineering for the supply chain, AS 9110 which covers maintenance, repair and overhaul activities, and AS 9120 which encompasses suppliers and distributors across the aerospace supply chain.

Our brand new interactive Virtual Classroom training facility, which is led by a real tutor and delivered online in real time, enhances our service offering to clients and prepares them for the imminent updates to standards.

This includes a series of modules which provide both the global auditor base and our clients with the opportunity to improve their understanding and achieve continued professional development across a range of subjects. Initial modules include AS 9100D Leadership Overview and AS 9100D Understanding & Internal Auditing.

Why Bureau Veritas?

A global leader with an aerospace client base covering 900 sites across 24 countries, Bureau Veritas has helped drive improvement and compliance across a wide range of focus areas including product safety, risk management, configuration management, prevention of counterfeit parts and installation of approved parts. The aerospace audits also cover ethical behaviours, human factors, qualified personnel and change management, amongst other areas.
