What is sustainability report assurance?

An independent, third-party check of the ESG information you publish. An assurance provider tests your sustainability report, ESG metrics and greenhouse gas data against the reporting criteria you have used, such as CSRD, GRI or ISSB.

The result is an assurance statement you can publish, so investors, regulators and customers can trust your disclosures. It works like a financial audit for non-financial information.

Who needs sustainability report assurance?

We help listed companies, large private groups and their sustainability teams in situations like these:

  • CSRD in scope: your EU operations bring you into CSRD, which requires independent assurance of your sustainability statement.
  • UK SRS reporting: you are preparing disclosures against the UK Sustainability Reporting Standards and want them assured before investors rely on them.
  • Investor or customer requests: lenders, investors or customers are asking for assured ESG data or emissions figures.
  • First-time assurance: you have never had your report assured and want to find the gaps before you commit.

Our sustainability and ESG assurance services

These sustainability assurance services run from your first readiness review to a published assurance statement, in the order most organisations need them. Not included: writing your report or setting your ESG strategy. For those, see our sustainability report advisory and ESG and sustainability strategy services.

Limited or reasonable assurance?

Both levels test the same information. The difference is how much evidence is gathered and the wording of the statement.

Image

Limited assurance

Fewer, more targeted procedures. The statement concludes that nothing has come to our attention to suggest the information is materially misstated. The usual starting point, and the level CSRD requires.
Image

Reasonable assurance

More extensive testing, similar in depth to a financial audit. The statement gives a positive opinion that the information is fairly presented in all material respects. Often chosen for key KPIs or emissions data.

Frameworks and standards we work with

We assure reporting prepared under the main UK, EU and international frameworks.

Reporting frameworks: CSRD and ESRS, UK SRS S1 and S2, GRI, TNFD, [ISSB (IFRS S1 and S2), SASB, TCFD]

Assurance standards: AA1000AS, ISAE 3000, [ISSA 5000, ISO 14064-3]

Climate and carbon: [Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR), GHG Protocol, Science Based Targets (SBTi), CDP, EU Taxonomy]

For greenhouse gas statements on their own, see our greenhouse gas validation and verification service.

How sustainability report assurance works

From first call to a published assurance statement, in three steps.

  • A gap in nature representing gap analysis for CSRD

    Step 1

    Scope

A scoping call to agree the criteria, boundary and level of assurance, then a risk assessment and data request. [Timescale]

  • Green server stack for sustainability data collection

    Step 2

    Test

Interviews, site or remote visits and testing of your evidence back to source data. [Timescale]

  • Stack of logs for global reporting initiative

    Step 3

    Report

An assurance statement for publication, plus a confidential management report.

Step 1: Scope and plan

We agree the information to be assured, the reporting criteria, the boundary and the level of assurance. We then carry out a risk assessment, request the data we need and check your readiness, so any gaps are flagged early. [Timescale]

  • Step 2: Test

Through interviews, site or remote visits and evidence testing, we trace reported figures and claims back to source data and assess where the risk of material misstatement sits. [Timescale]

  • Step 3: Report

You receive an independent assurance statement for publication in your sustainability report, setting out the scope, the standard used, the level of assurance and our conclusion, plus a confidential management report with our findings and recommendations.

ESG assurance FAQs

Answers to the questions we are asked most often.

What is sustainability assurance?

An independent check of the sustainability and ESG information an organisation publishes. The assurance provider tests the data, methods and controls behind the disclosures against the reporting criteria used, then issues a statement on whether the information is reliable.

  • What is the difference between limited and reasonable assurance?

Limited assurance uses fewer procedures and concludes that nothing has come to the provider's attention to suggest the information is materially misstated. Reasonable assurance involves more extensive testing and gives a positive opinion, similar to a financial audit.

  • Do I need ESG assurance for CSRD?

Yes. Companies in scope of CSRD must have their sustainability statement independently assured, at limited assurance level. UK groups can be brought into scope through their EU operations, so it is worth checking your position early.

  • Does UK SRS reporting need to be assured?

UK SRS S1 and S2, published in February 2026, are the UK's versions of the ISSB standards. Under the FCA's rules, companies in scope report against them on a comply or explain basis for periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027, and must state whether their disclosures have been independently assured. Assurance itself is not yet mandatory, but investors increasingly look for it.

  • What is ISAE 3000?

ISAE 3000 (Revised) is the international standard for assurance engagements on information other than historical financial statements. It is the most widely used standard for sustainability assurance today.

  • What is ISSA 5000?

ISSA 5000 is the IAASB's global standard written specifically for sustainability assurance. The FRC has issued a UK version, ISSA (UK) 5000, which applies to periods beginning on or after 15 December 2026.

  • What is double materiality?

The CSRD test for which topics you must report. Impact materiality looks at how your business affects people and the environment. Financial materiality looks at how sustainability issues affect your business. A topic is material if it matters from either view. For help carrying out the assessment itself, see our materiality assessments service.

  • What information can be assured?

Anything with clear reporting criteria: a full sustainability report, selected ESG KPIs, Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions, climate disclosures, targets and supply chain data.

  • How long does it take, and what does it cost?

It depends on the scope, the level of assurance and how ready your data is. We agree both after a short scoping call, so you have a clear proposal before any work starts.

  • Do I need a readiness review first?

It is not required, but it is recommended for first-time assurance. A readiness review finds gaps in data, controls and evidence before the formal engagement, which reduces the risk of a qualified conclusion. See our gap analysis and maturity assessment service.

  • Can the same provider advise on and assure my report?

Not at the same time. To protect impartiality, Bureau Veritas does not provide advisory and assurance to the same client simultaneously. If you need help preparing your report, see our sustainability report advisory service.

  • Who can provide sustainability report assurance?

Both audit firms and independent assurance providers. ISSA 5000 was written for any qualified assurance practitioner, not only accountants, provided they meet its ethics, independence and quality management requirements. When choosing a provider, look for independence from your reporting, experience in your sector and technical knowledge of the data being assured.
