Sammy Tweddle - career story
Sammy shares his two new appointments, which will enable him to foster new connections and share knowledge in vital energy topics.
Head of Nuclear Power
I have recently been appointed to the National Skills Academy Nuclear (NSAN) Advisory Board, and the Institute of Physics (IOP)
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR LAST TWO APPOINTMENTS?
I have recently been appointed to the National Skills Academy Nuclear (NSAN) Advisory Board, which feeds into the national skills agenda to address future skills gaps, and the Institute of Physics (IOP) Energy Committee. The IOP Energy Committee allows members to connect and share knowledge and ideas across key topics such as efficient use of energy, various power-generation technologies and security of supply.
WHAT CHALLENEGS DO YOU FACE IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
Developing and retaining skilled engineers is a real challenge for the sector – we’re aware how important it is to keep our engineers and inspectors engaged, with clear paths for professional development. Looking across the sector, we’ve historically faced challenges from other sectors looking to take advantage of transferrable skills of scientists and engineers. This can result in a lack of depth of experience, as well as diverse thought and representation from all backgrounds. These are both areas that we’re continually looking to improve.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE?
No two days are the same. We have a huge variety of clients and provide a diverse set of engineering services from nuclear pressure equipment to machinery, lifts, structural engineering, non-destructive testing and many more!
IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY WORK, HOW DO YOU CONTRIBUTE TO SHAPING A WORLD OF TRUST?
We provide Accredited and Non-accredited Independent Third-Party Assurance and QA/QC services to the Engineering and Power sectors to offer an objective and trustworthy assessment of the work produced. This independent approach provides confidence to the customer that we can be trusted in our assessment in helping progress their programmes and operational needs.
WHAT HAS BEEN A PERSONAL HIGHLIGHT SINCE JOINING US?
I was personally invited for a tour of HMAS Adelaide, the largest warship in the Royal Australian Navy, and was introduced to the fantastic staff whilst getting a walkthrough on how it supports humanitarian crises across the Pacific. It was a truly special moment in my career which could have only happened at Bureau Vertias.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE CONSIDERING A CAREER WITH US?
Have an open mind on what you will be asked to do day-to-day as this can be a real variety, make sure it suits your development plans and bring all your enthusiasm to a role where you will be shaping a world of trust.
WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF WORK TO HAVE FUN?
I have a young family which keeps me busy most of the time! Outside of this I am a keen NFL and Formula 1 fan. I also volunteer as a Maths tutor with Action Tutoring as part of Bureau Veritas’s volunteer programme.
