UK CEMENT MANUFACTURING SECTOR
The UK cement manufacturing sector is a significant contributor to the national economy, producing around 9 million tonnes of cement annually.
CLIENT CHALLENGE
Lightning protection systems are used to prevent or lessen lightning strike damage to buildings, providing vital protection for the internal electrical components of a building. Such systems work by intercepting a strike. If lightning hits the building, a metal lightning rod mounted on the building will be hit first, which causes the strike to be conducted through a wire, and passing through to the ground safely. To ensure the integrity, safety and operation of such systems, it is important that they are assessed periodically as part of the site’s health and safety risk management strategy.
With approximately 300,000 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes occurring in the UK annually, the risk to personnel safety and infrastructure damage was significant.
The client operates a large-scale cement plant in the UK, with structures reaching heights of over 100 metres. Given the nature of cement production and the scale of the facility, ensuring proper lightning protection was crucial for several reasons:
- Safety: The plant employs numerous workers who need protection from potential lightning strikes during their daily operations.
- Infrastructure Protection: The facility houses expensive and critical equipment that could be severely damaged by lightning strikes, potentially leading to costly downtime and repairs.
- Regulatory Compliance: Adhering to BS EN 62305 is essential for meeting legal and insurance requirements.
- Risk Management: As part of the site's health and safety strategy, regular assessment of the lightning protection system was necessary to mitigate risks effectively.
Key project DELIVERABLES:
- Assess the compliance of existing lightning protection installations with BS EN 62305 (British Standard for Lightning Protection).
- Identify any potential vulnerabilities in the current system that could increase the risk of injury or damage from lightning strikes.
- Provide expert recommendations for system improvements to enhance safety and risk management at the site.
