CLIENT CHALLENGE

Lanpro Services, a planning consultancy, was tasked with supporting Island Green Power in securing development consent for two Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) - the Cottam Solar Project and the West Burton Solar Project.

These proposed solar farms were to connect at the sites of decommissioned coal-fired power stations and required comprehensive environmental assessments to evaluate their potential climate change impacts and benefits.

The primary challenge was to quantify the carbon emissions and savings associated with the projects, assess the resilience of the projects to climate change impacts, and identify and mitigate potential environmental effects to secure development consent for two NSIPs, which required rigorous environmental assessments. These assessments needed to:

  • Quantify the renewable energy generation capacity and associated carbon savings.
  • Assess the resilience of the projects to climate change impacts.
  • Identify and mitigate potential environmental effects.

The projects aimed to contribute to the UK’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, making it essential to demonstrate their environmental benefits and compliance with regulatory standards.

Lanpro needed expert environmental consultants to prepare detailed Climate Change Preliminary Environmental Information Reports (PEIRs) and Environmental Statement (ES) Chapters.

These reports were essential for demonstrating the net climate change benefits of the projects and supporting the planning applications, which aimed to contribute to the UK’s target of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
