CLIENT CHALLENGE

An engineering service provider faced a critical challenge in their commercial development project in the East of England. The company and their appointed Independent Connections Provider (ICP) had calculated different sizes for the sub-main cable from the DNO sub-station to the LV panel. With cable costs varying significantly based on specification, this discrepancy had substantial financial implications alongside potential risks to the project's safety, compliance, and efficiency.

The engineering service provider needed an independent, expert verification of the electrical design to resolve this issue and ensure the correct cable size was used.

A key component of this installation was the LV sub-main cable from the DNO sub-station to the LV panel, spanning 39 meters per leg. The cable was to be installed using underground ducting externally and cable ladder internally.

The challenge arose when when the two parties calculated different sizes for the critical cable. This discrepancy created uncertainty and potential risks:

  • Safety concerns: If an undersized cable was used.
  • Unnecessary costs: If an oversized cable was specified.
  • Potential delays: In project timeline due to the unresolved issue.
  • Compliance risks: With relevant electrical standards and regulations. The client needed a trusted, independent expert to resolve this discrepancy and provide a definitive answer on the correct cable size.
Key project DELIVERABLES:
  • The solution had to be based on rigorous analysis and comply with all relevant standards, particularly BS 7671: Requirements for Electrical Installations - IET Wiring Regulations.
