Noise at Work Competency

OBJECTIVES

The Noise at Work competency training course extends over 3 days and is inclusive of both classroom time and a practical session at a local industrial facility. The course will cover a range of topics starting with the fundamentals and basics of acoustics, noise generation and impacts, through to the requirements and implementation of the Regulations.
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Identify personnel at risk from noise exposure
  • Undertake noise calculations
  • Use monitoring equipment and establish noise doses through calculation and dosimetry
  • Plan and carry out noise surveys in their workplace
  • Record and report the findings of a noise exposure assessment
  • Understand hearing protection and noise control principles

WHO THE COURSE IS FOR?

This course is intended to provide competency and training to enable you to carry out noise at work risk assessments in line with the Health & Safety Executive’s Control of Noise at Work Regulations (2005).

*For clients wishing to use our innovative and proprietary software package – our Noise Exposure Management System (NEMS) to calculate workforce noise exposure, an additional days training can be provided.

COURSE CONTENTS

On the first day the course will cover:
  • The basics of acoustics, sound waves and wave properties
  • Physiology of the ear
  • Noise induced hearing loss
  • The principles of noise measurements (Decibels and frequency weightings)
  • Decibel calculations (adding, multiplication, averaging etc.)
  • Coursework exercises
On the second day the course will cover:
  • Noise exposure and noise exposure calculations
  • Noise level meters
  • Practical use of a dosimeter
  • Noise level measurement
  • The requirements of the HSE Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005
On the third day the course will cover:
  • Hearing protection
  • Hearing protection calculations
  • Noise control
  • Practical session at a local industrial facility
  • Preparation of a noise at work risk assessment and report
An additional 1 day course (fourth day) can be added as a completion to the above training to gain competency in the use of our NEMS software. This additional day includes:
  • Introduction and practical us of NEMS
  • Use of NEMS to determine overall effect on noise levels and exposure; and
  • Use of area average noise levels (Leq’s)and dosimetry data with the NEMS system.
