What safety regulations apply to the food industry?

Anybody involved in the food industry, from food processing and manufacture through to catering establishments and retailers, must work to a series of strict regulations that help ensure the safety and compliance of food and drink.

Food businesses must meet their obligations under their food safety legislative requirements, which make it an offence for anyone to offer food which is potentially harmful to health.

Those regulations include:

  • The Food Safety Act 1990
  • The General Food Regulations 2004
  • Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 Regulation (EC) No 853/2004
  • The Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013
  • Food Information Regulations 2014
  • Regulation (EC) No 178/2002

To meet these requirements, a written food safety management plan and procedures, based on HACCP principles, must be put in place, implemented and maintained.

The goal of HACCP is to ensure that food products are safe for consumption and meet relevant safety standards.

What is HACCP?

HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point System. It is a food safety risk management tool designed to support organisations to manage food safety risks by identifying and evaluating potential hazards and putting in place controls to manage them throughout the supply chain and production processes.

Why does food safety and HACCP matter?

HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point System. It is a food safety risk management tool designed to support organisations to manage food safety risks by identifying and evaluating potential hazards and putting in place controls to manage them throughout the supply chain and production processes.

Today’s consumers want to know where their food comes from, how it was made and processed, and how its safety was maintained. As a food industry professional, you need to demonstrate responsible practices, full product traceability and auditable processes to meet these expectations — which is becoming an increasingly complex challenge due to increased regulatory demands.

How can organisations drive continuous improvement?

Above the minimum requirement of written food safety management plan and procedures, organisations can showcase their commitment to safety and drive continuous improvement through certification to various global standards. Bureau Veritas provides audits across a range of food industry certification standards, with an expert team on hand to support your certification journey.

  • ISO 22000 - the international standard for food safety management systems, which outlines the requirements for organisations that are involved in any aspect of the food chain to ensure that the food they produce is safe for consumption.

  • FSSC 22000 – which builds on the requirements of ISO 22000, together with sector-specific Pre-Requisite Programmes (PRPs) and defined additional requirements. It is seen as the next step for those organisations certified to ISO 22000 that want to show further commitment and achieve a GFSI-recognised standard.

  • BRCGS Food Safety – a recognised food hygiene certification covering key issues impacting the food industry including food safety, packaging and storage/distribution. It provides a framework to manage safety, integrity, legality and quality.

  • GMP+ - an international standard cover the entire feed production chain, from raw materials through to transport and farming. It combines the principles of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) to help ensure quality and consistency in animal feed and feed ingredients.
