As the energy landscape continues to evolve, organisations face rising expectations around safety, compliance and transparency. Independent assurance plays a significant role in meeting those expectations. To support the launch of our Competent Body Assurance Guide and Checklist, we spoke with Darren Taylor, Energy Business Development Director at Bureau Veritas UK & Ireland, to explore what competent body assurance involves, why independence matters, and how organisations can make informed decisions when selecting an assurance partner.

Why has competent body assurance become such a prominent issue in the energy sector?

The pace of change in the energy sector means organisations are working with increasingly complex technologies, regulatory frameworks and stakeholder expectations. In this environment, independent assurance, delivered by a competent body, provides confidence that operations and assets meet recognised requirements.

It helps organisations demonstrate that they are managing risk effectively, complying with relevant standards and maintaining operational integrity. As scrutiny increases, assurance is no longer a “Nice to have”; it has become an essential element of responsible operation.

Many organisations still find the assurance landscape difficult to navigate. How do the different roles within it work together?

There are several layers, and they each play a specific part. Firstly, you have the organisations that develop and publish the standards the industry relies on. These entities define the technical requirements but do not, by default, necessarily carry out assurance activities.

Then you have the bodies responsible for awarding approval status or accreditation. Their role is to independently evaluate assurance providers to confirm they meet recognised criteria for impartiality, competence and consistent methodology.

Finally, competent bodies, such as Bureau Veritas, apply those standards through audits, inspections, verification and certification. It is worth bearing in mind that assurance does not need to be carried out by the organisation that authored the standard. Any independent body with the appropriate approval or accreditation can deliver that service, which supports choice, independence and objectivity for clients.

What misconceptions do you see most frequently around assurance?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that only the organisation that wrote the standard is allowed to provide assurance against it. That’s simply not the case.  A competent body that holds the appropriate approval status or accreditation can deliver that assurance. Critically selecting the right approved, independent, competent assurance body ensures optimum objectivity, rigour, and credibility.

What should organisations prioritise when choosing an assurance partner?

Approval status or accreditation is a key starting point, but it shouldn’t be the only consideration. Organisations should ensure the assurance body has genuine experience within their specific segment of the energy value chain, a strong understanding of the operational environment, and a transparent approach to how assessments are carried out.

The quality of reporting is also critical. Assurance is only valuable if the output is clear, usable and aligned with regulatory and stakeholder expectations. Our new Quick guide includes a practical checklist to help decision makers evaluate these areas before making a commitment.
