DON’T IGNORE APPROACHING DEADLINE FOR CARBON DISCLOSURE PROJECT SUBMISSION, ADVISES BUREAU VERITAS

Mar. 11 2022

With the deadline for Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) submissions less than six months away (27 July 2022), leading sustainability consultancy, Bureau Veritas, is encouraging businesses to act now on their own disclosure to ensure the necessary reporting is completed in time.

As the link between sustainability and prosperity has become increasingly clear in recent years, there has been an upsurge in businesses coming forward about their sustainability credentials in a bid to impress discerning investors and customers. Now, three months on from COP26 and with an ever-increasing global focus on Greenhouse gas and sustainability, there has never been a more important time for firms to ensure they measure, disclose, report, and communicate and act on sustainability strategy.

With a number of brands – across automotive, food, manufacturing, and fashion – found guilty of ‘greenwashing’ in recent years, the importance of CDP in assessing and disclosing true green credentials is invaluable, supporting companies to future-proof their operations and organisation.

CDP helps to provide information and improves transparency, to customers, stakeholders, and investors. Going through the CDP disclosure process also facilitates the identification and proactive management of potential risks and opportunities on climate change, forests, and water security.

“The deadline for CDP submissions is less than six months away, and we strongly urge businesses to act now to ensure their submissions are completed in advance of this deadline. With a total of 279 questions to answer across climate change, forests and water security, it is certainly no mean feat.

“However, the value in doing so is immeasurable. As consumers become more eco-savvy, they seek to deal with firms who demonstrate the same eco-awareness as them. Concurrently access to investment is increasingly linked to demonstrating performance and strategy.”

In charge of the world’s most prominent environmental disclosure system, each year CDP measures and accredits thousands of companies and cities on climate change, deforestation and water security. As part of this process, which over the last 20 years has encouraged unrivalled engagement on environmental issues, CDP scores the responses of each organisation and publishes the scoring results annually.

Chris continues: “Given the large number of questions involved across the CDP questionnaires, some ESG managers, sustainability directors and even procurement teams involved in regulatory affairs, may require support to ensure responses are accurate and best demonstrate their firms’ credentials – in this instance, a third party consultant or verifier is a useful partner.

“At Bureau Veritas, we have experience advising and consulting with organisations that are looking to improve their CDP score or need support with their disclosure. This may be of particular use to those who are reporting for the first time, or companies that have seen their score decrease in recent years – perhaps as a result of diverting focus and resources to managing the Covid-19 pandemic – and need to look for areas of improvement. Alternatively, we are able to independently verify the data disclosed to CDP to ensure it is free off material misstatement, which will increase your score as it helps meet additional criteria and provides a more robust data set on which to base prioritisation and targeting, giving more confidence to stakeholders about the company’s data and commitment to sustainability.”

As a former CDP Scoring Partner for 2020, Bureau Veritas has experience and technical expertise in helping some of the world’s largest organisations improve their sustainability performance in a number of sectors including food, pharmaceutical, finance and manufacturing. With a proven track record in verification of environmental, health and safety, corporate social responsibility and social sustainability data, including conducting audits against the requirements of ISAE1000, ISO 14064 Part 3, Bureau Veritas is also a GRI Community Member, an AA1000AS Licensed Provider and a UKAS accredited ISO 14064-1 Verification Body and wide consultancy experience in the same domains.
