Bureau Veritas UK - Air Quality

I wanted to focus my career on consultancy as I enjoyed the fast-paced nature of the work and found satisfaction in advising clients and coming up with solutions to improve air quality. As a result, I moved back to the UK, and after a short time in another consultancy role, I landed a job at Bureau Veritas in 2017 as a Senior Air Quality Consultant.

Could you describe your career path and current position at Bureau Veritas UK?

My career path started in 2012 when I was completing my MSc at Imperial College London and was looking for a job within the Air Quality Sector. I stumbled across a role advertised at an air quality monitoring company out in New Zealand and spent four amazing years working in my field of interest in Auckland. I eventually realised I wanted to focus my career on consultancy as I enjoyed the fast-paced nature of the work and found satisfaction in advising clients and coming up with solutions to improve air quality. As a result, I moved back to the UK, and after a short time in another consultancy role, I landed a job at Bureau Veritas in 2017 as a Senior Air Quality Consultant. I am now a Principal Air Quality Consultant in the growing Air Quality Team. My role involves project managing a wide variety of contracts for clients across numerous sectors, providing technical solutions to complex issues, and managing and supporting junior team members.

In your day-to-day work, how do you contribute to Shaping a World of Trust?

Working within the environmental consultancy field comes with a big responsibility due to the nature of the work. I manage the Local Air Quality Management contracts, which puts us responsible for assisting local authorities and the national government with developing policy and technical guidance to inform the assessment of air quality across the UK. As part of this, I provide advice on the management of air quality issues within local areas. As a result, I need to ensure I provide accurate and reliable information. Appreciating the environmental and health implications of my role ensures I am contributing to Bureau Veritas's values and Shaping a World of Trust.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy a lot of aspects of my role. Working in the environmental field is very rewarding and it feels like you are making a real difference. However, the part I enjoy most about my role is the team I am part of. Despite being spread across the country, we are a close team that supports one another. We recently had a team event in Manchester which involved two days of work-focused activities and an evening social which helped us strengthen our team's relationships further.

What has been a personal highlight since joining us?

A personal highlight for me is when I had the opportunity to visit the Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Plant. It was fascinating to see such a huge development in person and see the significant infrastructure required to support the construction. I also happened to visit when the world’s largest crane was currently at the site. The crane was able to carry 5000 tonnes in a single lift!

What would you say to someone considering a career with us?

To someone considering a career with Bureau Veritas UK, I would say that the company has changed so much in the six years I have been working here. It is a company that knows how to adapt to the changing nature of the working world. It offers a great work-life balance whilst also challenging me to continue to improve in my area of expertise.

What do you do outside of work to have fun?

I am an avid traveller and have just recently returned from travelling in Japan. I enjoy experiencing new cultures and trying new food wherever I go. Whilst out there I ended up walking almost 300km, which included hiking up two mountains!
