EXPLORING OFFSHORE WIND IN ADVANCE OF KEY GLOBAL CONFERENCE

Apr. 26 2024

Ahead of the Energy Industries Council North Sea Decarbonisation Conference 2024 in London next week (30 April – 1 May), we catch up with Stephan Ciniselli, Global Director Offshore Wind for Bureau Veritas.

Stephan will be presenting a panel session on offshore wind called ‘Wind Today, Green Tomorrow’ at the conference, looking at the role of offshore wind in the UK and Europe’s green transition.

As the offshore wind project pipeline continues to increase and provide important economic and environmental opportunities, he will explore some of the latest developments and highlight the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in this sector.

See Stephan’s insights into offshore wind here, or secure your place at the conference for a more detailed exploration of this critical sector.

What trends are most evident in the offshore wind market?

There's a strong global growth in offshore wind which is expected to continue over the coming 20-30 years. We’re at the beginning of this growth curve (see chart below), so there’s a lot more to come.

How does Bureau Veritas ensure efficiency of service through offshore wind across global locations?

Generally we operate in three layers; first, the expert team on the ground in a given country, second a network of 20 global technical centres with specific expertise, and thirdly an expert global team ensuring successful co-ordination and execution of projects in line with the latest best practices. This unique scale and coverage helps exceed expectations and deliver efficiency of service worldwide.

How would you describe current challenges in the market?

There are many challenges in offshore wind, namely slow and complex permitting, supply chain constrains and bottlenecks, scarcity of skilled workforce and technical experts, and the need for technology advancements and cost reduction - especially for floating technologies.

What do you predict happening in the global offshore market?

I believe there will be continued strong growth over the coming decades, and expect to see many new countries who have coastlines and wind tap into the opportunities.

You’ll be presenting at the EIC’s North Sea Decarbonisation Conference - what will be the key takeaways from your session?

I’ll present about the key challenges that developers face during the procurement and construction phases of offshore wind farm development, and give an insight into how Bureau Veritas can help by offering integrated QA/QC services during these phases.
