Carbon footprinting

CALCULATING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) is top of the corporate agenda as organisations continue to take steps to monitor and reduce their carbon emissions. This is all part of the effort to help meet global targets for carbon reduction and mitigate climate change. Carbon footprint calculation is a vital part of meeting those targets.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CALCULATE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT?

It is difficult to establish a Net Zero roadmap until you have measured your impact, which includes calculating your carbon footprint. However, it can be a complex and time-consuming process to gather and collate data, even before you begin to use that data to calculate an accurate and robust carbon footprint.

Bureau Veritas can help you develop a consistent approach to carbon footprinting, using internationally-recognised standards and protocols to establish a true measure of performance to help you accurately communicate your progress towards Net Zero.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS INVOLVED IN CALCULATING CARBON FOOTPRINT?

Bureau Veritas offers end-to-end sustainability solutions including carbon footprint independent inventory and independent calculation services:

We first work with clients to establish a carbon footprint inventory, which includes the following steps:

  • Determine the scopes and boundaries
  • Define Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions sources
  • Establish GHG inventory method, assumptions and baseline
  • Re-assess periodically to reflect changes in operations

Next, we provide an independent carbon footprint calculation. Our expert team will agree on the calculation methodology with client before conduct the calculation using an innovative carbon footprint calculation tool, which includes:

  • Determining appropriate conversion factors from energy source to GHG emissions (databases)
  • Converting all GHGs to CO2eq. according to their Global Warming Potential (GWP) to have the same unit
  • Calculating a footprint per scope

This is followed by re-calculating periodically to reflect changes in emissions, using our carbon footprint calculation tool.

Lastly, we interpret the results and communicate to our client, using the carbon footprint data to shape the client’s Net Zero reduction strategy and roadmap.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF CARBON FOOTPRINTING?

  • Gain confidence in ongoing regulatory compliance
  • Deliver efficiencies through consumption, emissions and cost reductions
  • Identify a reliable baseline for strategic decision making
  • Support implementation of a longer-term climate change mitigation strategy
  • Ensure the accuracy of carbon data for internal and external communication
  • Improve credibility through reliable carbon reporting and disclosure
  • Improve accountability and reputation as a carbon conscious organisation
