Best practice guidelines for electrical inspections in wet areas

Jun. 24 2019

There are a number of health and safety obligations placed on hotels, spas, leisure centres and sports organisations. Managing and meeting all these obligations across the entire facility can be a challenge, but perhaps none more so than in leisure facilities.

MANAGE RISK IN ‘WET AREAS’

‘Wet areas’ such as swimming pools, saunas, steam rooms and jacuzzis pose a greater risk of injury or electric shock from electrical installations. Cables and equipment are also more susceptible to corrosion due to moisture and the IP (ingress protection) rating of equipment needs to be higher to prevent ingress of moisture as defined by specified zones within BS7671 (The IET Wiring Regulations).

Although non-statutory, BS7671 serves as a best practice guide and it is widely recognised that achieving compliance with BS7671 would satisfy the requirements of the relevant part of the Electricity at Work Regulations.

The standard gives recommended maximum periods between inspections and testing in various locations, and states that the maximum period between inspections and testing in swimming pools should be one year and routine checks every four months.
