Scientific support for fire and rescue services
Combining expert scientific knowledge with unrivalled operational excellence, we can provide relevant advice and support on scientific matters ranging from the development of policy, taking part in working groups and committees or even acting as an expert witness.
Our fire science team operates three laboratories covering chemical analysis and calibration of analytical equipment (including radiation detection equipment), forensic fire investigation and fire testing of materials to determine how they react when exposed to heat and flame.
Forensic fire investigation
Investigating the causes of fires is one of the most effective ways to identify new trends and ensure that improvements in fire safety can be implemented quickly. With a team of experienced fire investigators, we help clients to determine how fires start and develop.
Our services include the forensic excavation of fire scenes, laboratory analysis of samples and materials removed from the scene and non-destructive testing using our portable x-ray equipment. Whatever the size of the fire you can rely on the Bureau Veritas team to help you find the evidence to prove how it started, developed and spread.
For over 40 years the Bureau Veritas fire science team has been providing 24/7 support to the fire services at incidents involving hazardous materials of all types. This can be achieved remotely via telephone or in person, depending on the individual requirements of each incident.
Our services also cover environmental protection, including air quality monitoring and analysis of possible pollutants, as well as operational support at the scene of incidents with advice on chemical behaviour and decontamination strategy, amongst others.
Our team is highly experienced in assisting the fire and rescue services in the UK with forensic fire investigations, with thousands of projects successfully completed. Our accident investigation capabilities including providing support to fire investigators, fire scene photography and recording, interpretation of evidence to determine cause and investigation of fatal and deliberate fires. We can also offer independent verification of rekindling and selection of samples for further analysis.
Fire and rescue service training
We also work closely with fire and rescue services to help their teams better understand fire science and the impact it has on their day to day work. Our courses cover everything from forensic fire investigation, fire scene photography and asbestos recognition and identification, to skills refresher training for hazardous materials specialists and noise at work and hand arm vibration training.
We also offer Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS), Incidents involving Individual Chemical Exposure (ICE) and Analytical Skills Development and Maintenance (ASDM and ASDM+) training – all backed by the comprehensive support and industry leading accreditations that you would expect from a true global leader.
