Water Hygiene Control: Remove the Risks

19/10/16

You may have already read about the organisation that was fined £1.8million last month for failing to protect its workers from Legionnaire’s disease after environmental health officers uncovered a serious lack of compliance in maintaining water systems at the workplace.

It is one of the biggest ever fines for water hygiene failures and should serve as a stark reminder to any employer that they must undertake the necessary assessments and put in place control measures to address the risk of legionella.

Nobody should need reminding of the importance of water hygiene in the workplace – but not all organisations have the resource or the capability in house to deal with the risk. With extensive knowledge of legionella control across our team and a wealth of experience in the area of water control, no one is better placed to offer independent, third-party support than Bureau Veritas.

The staggering £1.8million fine came following a report a council worker has contracted Legionnaire’s disease, a serious lung infection which causes flu-like symptoms. Environmental health officers could not prove the worker has contracted the disease through his place of work, but did discover failures in maintaining compliance over water systems.

Staff had received inadequate training, no up to date policies were available and with no suitable and sufficient risk assessments in place, it was deemed impossible to safely operate or manage the building’s water systems. As a result, the HSE ruled that the company in question did not take the steps required to reduce the risk of Legionnaires’ disease from its water systems. The firm was fined £1.8million and order to pay court costs of £34,000.

Our services include legionella risk assessment, preparation of schematic drawings, logbook and monitoring programme preparation and legionella awareness and management training for your employees. We can also offer water sampling and analysis.

By evaluating your risks and putting the appropriate measures in place to control them, we can help to ensure that your organisation is compliant, improve safety and prevent the risk of costly fines.
