Meet the Experts: Souvik Ghosh, Associate Director - Sustainability Services


Our ‘Meet the Experts’ series is back and this time it’s the turn of Souvik Ghosh from our Sustainability team to showcase his expertise. Here Souvik speaks about the role of sustainability within an organisation and why it has become so important to integrate it within the wider business strategy.



Tell us about your own experiences through the years and how they’ve helped you in your role at Bureau Veritas.


I joined Bureau Veritas in August 2018 as an associate director in the Sustainability team, after spending more than 11 years working for large global organisations on both advisory and assurance roles across climate change and sustainability services.


Now I work with clients from a wide range of sectors in the UK and across the world, as well as a number of international Bureau Veritas businesses including Bureau Veritas Japan, Switzerland and France.


I’m pleased to be able to bring a wealth of experience, not only on progressive climate change and sustainability solutions, but on a number of other aspects too. For example, I’ve worked with clients from across the globe, managed large teams in multiple countries, led the implementation of new reporting solutions and consulted on a number of international projects – all valuable experiences for my current role.


What is sustainability and why is it so important?


Today, a company’s success is measured not only in financial terms, but also in non-financial terms. Investors, stakeholders and consumers are increasingly looking at non-financial performance and factoring those results into their decisions around investment, engagement and purchasing decisions. Incorporating non-financial parameters – like sustainability performance - into an organisation’s strategy and decisions has become vital. Companies today are working towards value creation and impact assessment models, integrating financial and non-financial performance to ensure long term growth. 


Specifically, whilst there is no single definition of sustainability, it broadly relates to development or activity that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs and aspirations.


Crucially, it is not only the organisation’s own sustainable performance that must be considered. That of its supply chain can also have a huge effect on reputation, profitability and investor confidence too.


What are the most pressing priorities for creating a sustainable future?


From an organisation’s perspective, there are largely two main areas to consider; environmental sustainability and social sustainability. These perspectives are not only limited to the organisational boundary.


Environmental factors relates to initiatives to optimise energy consumption and reduce carbon footprint, optimise water consumption and reduce waste generated by shifting from a linear approach to a circular closed loop approach, demonstrating commitment to protect the earth’s resources and others.


Social sustainability is just as important, and not only relates to the business itself; employee engagement, development and safety, for example, but also includes corporate social development initiatives.


Ultimately, good sustainability performance is about continuous improvement over and above legislative requirements. Whether environmental or social sustainability, any organisation focusing on sustainability needs to practise it in order to demonstrate commitment and stay ahead of any potential legislative changes which might otherwise force changes.


What challenges do businesses face?


There are a wide range of challenges relating to sustainability but the most important point to make is that sustainable business performance can drive competitive advantage. In today’s competitive world, forward-thinking companies will periodically analyse the non-financial issues pertinent to their organisation to make sure they are prepared for any change.

What one top tip would you give your clients?


If you’re not already doing it, be sure to integrate your sustainability strategy within the overall business strategy. Non-financial performance has become so important, with the potential to impact share price, investor confidence, public confidence, employee engagement and turnover, that you can’t afford not to.
