Acoustics & Vibration Group present at Euronoise 2009

02/11/09

26th - 28th October : Euronoise 2009

Euronoise 2009 has just taken place at the Edinburgh International Convention Centre, and was subtitled 'Action on Noise in Europe'.  Over 800 delegates attended from across Europe and other parts of the world.  Bureau Veritas was well represented with six papers being presented over the three days by Stephen Turner, Paul Freeborn, Colin Grimwood, Bernard Postlethwaite, Claire Shepherd and Vincent HiiJuiTa.  Bernard Postlethwaite also co-chaired an all-day session on Port Noise.  A highlight of the conference, as far as Bureau Veritas was concerned, was Paul Freeborn being presented at the conference banquet with a Distinguished Service Award from the Institute of Acoustics by its current president, John Hinton OBE.

In addition, Birgitta Berglund (editor of the World Health Organisation Guidelines for Community Noise) in her acceptance speech for an award, recognised the contribution that both Stephen Turner and Colin Grimwood had made in her education of acoustics.

  • Stephen Turner's presentation was in connection with the development of Noise Action Plans in England following the first round of noise mapping under the Environmental Noise Directive (END).
  • Colin Grimwood discussed the possible approaches to the protection of quiet areas during END noise action planning in England.
  • Claire Shepherd's paper was on a similar theme, and presented the results of a scoping study which considered approaches to the development of quiet zones within the City of London.
  • Paul Freeborn gave an overview of helicopter operations in the UK and talked about codes of practice to limit helicopter noise and also a noise abatement training programme.
  • Vincent HiiJuiTa discussed uncertainties in aircraft noise modelling and Bernard Postlethwaite gave an overview of the noise impact assessments and planning processes for two UK deepwater container terminals, touching on changes to planning legislation under the new Planning Act 2008.

From helicopters to quite areas, from policy guidance to computer modelling uncertainties...a truly diverse programme on offer from Bureau Veritas.
