Our performance development approach is a combination of two factors. What is needed for the company to achieve the goals we have set and also looking at the development needs of our people. We believe the two factors go hand in hand.
We believe it is important for us to make the most of the skills, knowledge and experience of our people. We recognise that everyone in our business has talents that contribute to our success, which is why we provide a full range of training, development, covering both initial and ongoing training. This includes:
Ongoing personal performance and development conversations: Our managers are encouraged to make employee development conversations a regular discussion rather than one that’s purely left for annual and mid-year reviews.
We also believe that people should take responsibility for their learning and career and we support all employees to plan their development in line with the needs of the company.
At Bureau Veritas we believe that good leadership rests on self-awareness and self-management as such we have developed an in-house bespoke Management Development Programme designed to enable our people managers to learn about themselves and the behaviours that will truly help them to succeed. In addition, managers have access to a variety of development options such as e-learning, work-shops, webinars and face to face coaching.
We are passionate about leadership development, improving skills and nurturing the leaders for tomorrow. Our Emerging Leaders programme is designed to allow our future leaders to develop the essential knowledge and skills as well as the confidence to take the next steps as a future leader in Bureau Veritas.
We also make use of the Apprentice Levy to develop existing employees.
If that’s not enough, we also offer specialist training for our surveyors to maintain standards and ensure technical excellence across our business. This includes a specially tailored induction training programme for new team members, together with a bespoke field training programme for a period of between 6 and 16 weeks, depending on previous experience. Once the field training phase is complete, all Engineer Surveyors are required to pass an industry standard (SAFed SS01) exam, which assesses technical knowledge. Feedback from the field training is also reviewed and subject to satisfactory completion of the training programme, employees are certified as competent and ready to start carrying out thorough examinations. Continued support is, of course, still provided via the team network and a training mentor.
The final part of the training is to obtain the SAFed H&S Passport, which is an industry requirement for all surveyors and demonstrates both to the business and our customers that you understand best practice health and safety arrangements specifically tailored to the role of an Engineer Surveyor.
We have also introduced the PATH programme, offering a career development programme for engineers, in either a management or technical capacity. PATH supports our engineering team leaders and technical experts, allowing them to continuously develop skills and harness opportunities within their field. It is also an opportunity for engineers joining the business to have access to a structured pathway to become team leaders themselves.

Each of these areas have been incorporated into each stage of the programme.
All Bureau Veritas engineers have been enrolled onto the PATH programme, which runs over a two year period and combines face-to-face and flexible e-learning, carried out by the PATH team of in-house training managers, technical team and line managers. PATH is also supported by the Bureau Veritas HR team. Our clients have also been incredibly supportive and can see the value in the initiative. They have offered support by sharing in-house technical competency and customer training when relevant, as well as access to training facilities where multiple types of assets may be in one location.
