Regional Senior Engineer, Lift/Escalator - North West - Liverpool, Chester and Blackpool 


What are the key responsibilities of a Senior Engineer?


 My role is split into two parts; where I spend four days a week carrying out inspections on lifts and escalators and one day as part of the Technical Quality and Risk (TQR) team. A large part of my role involves the actual carrying out of inspections, as well as dealing with queries I receive from surveyors. As the Senior Engineer it’s my job to assist the Surveyors and act as a senior point of referral for technical issues. I keep abreast of technical procedures, and legislative changes in order to provide the answers to any questions the team may have in regards to lifts and escalators. .


 My time as part of the TQR team focuses primarily on field and report audits – allowing me an ideal balance of on-site and desk time. Field audits cover everything from checking that inspections are carried out according to company procedure and in a safe manor and that everyone involved is aware of their role and responsibilities. Report audits differ slightly in that I manually check over any reports, to cross-check all the details, such as whether the engineer has put the right defect in the correct category.


As well as my role as a Senior Engineer, I am also the health and safety representative for the lift and escalators division at Bureau Veritas – a role which I have adopted recently. This aspect of my job enables me to escalate health and safety issues at forum meetings. Being responsible for my own and others’ work encourages me to review current practices and drive continuous improvement. 


 Talk me through a typical day.


 I cover a wide patch and so every day is varied in terms of the locations I’m in and the type of buildings I’ll be inspecting. A typical day for me involves meeting clients, introducing myself and explaining my role. As BV’s client base is wide-ranging, the type of people I’m speaking to varies – anyone from the concierge to the building owner – and so if they are not from a technical background it’s important my client gets to know and trust in me and my expertise in this area. Once onsite I will carry out a thorough inspection on the lift or lifts in the premises. The time taken to do an inspection varies, with the time obviously increasing when you go to a high rise building with more floors. I then produce a report based on my findings and will inform the clients of any issues or potential issues. If an urgent defect is issued with timed restraints or immediate action then we advise clients to liaise with their maintenance provider who will be able to address any issues that we pointed out. Myself, or one of the team, will return on the next inspection to ensure that the urgent defect was remedied. 


 How did you get your start in the industry?


 When I was at school we were asked to do a creative project and funnily enough I made a lift – and the rest is history! Once out of school I did an apprenticeship with my dad in welding and fabricating industrial lifting gear. I then moved to a different company where I started to make the entire lift, and soon I was on to fitting and installing them. Before I started at Bureau Veritas, I completed various qualifications to strengthen my knowledge and spent the following seven years working on construction sites and carrying out inspections on hoists/lifts in all types of weather!I’ve been in the industry for more than 20 years now and for me the biggest game changer has been health and safety. Rightfully so the importance of this has grown over time and there is now significantly more time factored in to this element of the job – which is just another reason for me to tighten up practices and ensure we are delivering the very best service we can.


 What do you enjoy about working at Bureau Veritas?


 For me the challenge and sometimes unpredictability that each day brings has been the most enjoyable part of working at Bureau Veritas. I can start off the day travelling to a lift inspection and then get a call from a surveyor that will mean I need to re-prioritise my day, assist with the issue as soon as I can and the continue with my own planned inspections. I have taken on more responsibility out of choice and I am pleased it hasn’t taken away from the practical element of my job. I enjoy being active, meeting clients and building that rapport – especially given that I’m a talker!

(Embedded) Health and Safety Manager - London / Nationwide


What are the key responsibilities of a Health and Safety Manager? 


I work with one particular organisation only, as opposed to having a number of clients on my books, and as such I refer to myself as an ‘Embedded Health and Safety Manager’ due to the level of involvement I have with just one client and their day-to-day operations.

 I’m also the main point of contact for staff within the organisation on any health and safety related queries. Part and parcel of this is improving the organisation’s health and safety culture and behaviours internally. My client is a large and dynamic organisation and so we are taking a considered and consistent approach to embedding a health and safety culture, with a view to this becoming the norm over time.

 Talk me through a typical day. 


 Certainly for this particular client as we’ve recently started working with them, we are essentially in the mobilisation stage. At the moment we’re in the phase of doing a gap analysis of systems, portfolio and compliance. This essentially involves going into the business and identifying what the gaps are and what can be done to move things forward.


A typical day for me is to check that I’ve got a strategy for the week as it tends to be very fast paced and fluid. Every Monday starts off with creating the plan for coming week’s activity. At this stage a lot of what I do is planning and undertaking site visits in order to better understand the organisation, its network of business and what they do day-to-day. For example, I have just visited eight sites within two weeks and have six sites to do this coming week. 


My role is very autonomous and so a typical day involves me ensuring that I am visible to the wider team. As there are so many London sites alone for the client, I will try to go to at least three offices a day and spend some time there so that that I’m seen as part of the team and so people feel comfortable talking to me and coming to me with any questions they might have.


As well as site visits I also engage with both internal and external stakeholders, such as facilities companies or service providers. As the main point of contact for health and safety I like to get to know as many strands of the business and people that I can. In regards to external stakeholders it is always useful to know their faces (and vice versa) and find out more about what their job entails – this is often done in a really informal way but is still an important facet to my role. 


Generally speaking my role at the moment focuses heavily on research and relationship building, but the role will develop as we get past the introductory stages. Due to the nature of my client’s work and the size of the organisation, there is a large reactionary element to the job and so I try to remain as flexible as possible so that I can respond to this. 


The hope is that the account will grow and as such we are always looking at clients to see where and how else we can add value. 


How did you get your start in the industry?


It was a total career change actually. I started off in the military at 17 and was in the army for almost six years before being offered the opportunity to have a look at some resettlement courses. 


Health and safety resettlement roles are particularly promoted by the military due to the crossover - as a huge element of the army is about staying on top of safety. 


I undertook some health and safety qualifications when I left the army and had an opportunity to work for an architectural business as an assistant and then moved into a consultant role thereafter. I spent some time in the public sector, before making the jump into the private sector to work for an international bank through working for a consultancy. I became a Bureau Veritas employee when they successfully took over that account but left for a client side role in the financial sector. However, when I had the opportunity to re-join the company, the opportunity was so diverse and appealing that I decided it was the best career and development move for me.


Although I did not come via the company’s military resettlement programme, I am aware of the scheme and have been offered the opportunity to get involved by potentially doing some roadshow events and ‘go-see me’ days. I think it’s a great initiative and once I’m settled with this new client I’ll definitely look to lend my support. 


There is a job to be done in speaking with people just before they leave the military to get an idea of what they are looking for and perhaps advising different roles to what they think they may be suited to. People from the military are well-placed to give honest feedback on the change of going from an active environment to an office-based or field-based role and adapting to be more autonomous and managing their own workloads and objectives. 


What do you enjoy about working at Bureau Veritas? 


Above all I enjoy the variety at Bureau Veritas and the opportunity to see a lot of different things. Even if you’re not working on an account, you still get exposure to what other similar sector clients are and the challenges they go through. We’ll have workshops to understand the industry issues and deal with a lot of subject matter experts to help advise on any specialist areas. 


The constant variety gives me the chance to do something totally different again and again. I can start projects, build them out and make it bespoke. Even if you stay on the same account, there is the chance to get new exposure to things you would not have come across before. 


I have the opportunity to get involved with global projects that I wouldn’t get to at a smaller organisation. You never feel isolated when you work on an account at Bureau Veritas, as you can always pick up the phone to someone else from with the company from anywhere in the world such as Asia or Europe. The advantage of having specialists on the other end of a phone, such as a client or asbestos expert, is so helpful when wanting advice on an issue. 


I would definitely recommend Bureau Veritas as a place to work as otherwise I wouldn’t have come back myself! I recently left Bureau Veritas to pursue other opportunities, although I always saw myself returning at some point – I just didn’t think it would be only six months later.


Bureau Veritas has been able to offer career development opportunities, which for me was exactly what I was looking for. As well as being a great business, the new client account also attracted me back to the role. I saw huge potential and it bought about a new challenge. For me, I have to be doing something different or have a vision for the role developing, so the fact that I regularly come across new areas to focus on, is great.

Business Unit Manager, Risk and Safety – London Office


What are the key responsibilities of a Business Unit Manager?  My role is pretty self-explanatory; I manage and run the Risk and Safety business unit. My job is to ensure our service is delivered on time, on budget and to a high quality. There is also the commercial aspect of my job, such as managing profit and loss and focusing on new business, but I also manage the engineers in my team. We’ve had three people within the unit promoted recently, which is great and demonstrates the career opportunities there are here, and I am currently interviewing and recruiting candidates for new roles.


Talk me through a typical day.  From day-to-day, my role can be extremely varied. I travel quite a lot, visiting clients to present technical results and develop relationships. We’re a global business, so from time to time, we work on international projects; for example, we are supporting the design of a new metro system in the Middle East, so I’ve been liaising with our sub-contractors here in the UK, who are acting as independent checking engineers. Other activity focuses on the day-to-day running of the business unit, for example, reviewing the business development plan, setting business priorities, coaching engineers and writing technical papers.


How did you get your start in the industry?  I’m from Australia and that’s where I studied as a Chemical Engineer. As part of my degree, I undertook a placement at an agricultural chemical manufacturer, who then hired me once I graduated. However, I wanted the opportunity to travel and eventually found myself in the UK, as it is a hub of engineering. I started at Bureau Veritas in 2010, as a Consultant in the Risk and Safety team, where I was able to put my technical skills to use, but also had the chance to carry out secondments in Abu Dhabi and Australia – one of the benefits of working for a global company.


Coming back to the UK, I realised there was an opportunity to develop the Risk and Safety team further, which helped me to progress into the role I’m in today. Also, taking part in Bureau Veritas’ Grow Your Talent programme helped me immensely in achieving that, as I have been able to develop my skills in becoming a leader in the business, which is important in my current role.


What do you enjoy about working at Bureau Veritas?  Working at Bureau Veritas is really fast-paced, which I enjoy, and our client base is so varied, which keeps the job interesting. However, what I enjoy most, is the entrepreneurial spirit here and the opportunity I’ve had to grow and shape the Risk and Safety team. This has led to my own career progression, as I am shortly due to start a new role within the business as Head of Technical Centre, which is a new centre of excellence looking at delivering innovative technical solutions to our clients.


I also enjoy engaging with different people and, as well as being a member of the Women in Engineering Society and Institute of Chemical Engineers, I also work on a programme called StemNet, which encourages children in school to study science and maths subjects, to ensure that engineering can be a career option. Developing the talent of the future is definitely something I enjoy doing.

Asbestos Surveyor - Hull Office


What are the key responsibilities of an Asbestos Surveyor?  Essentially, I will visit our customers and conduct a survey to investigate whether they have asbestos on site and, if so, outline our recommendations and the next steps to manage the asbestos.


I will either conduct a management survey, or a refurbishment survey (which is a little more intrusive). These surveys involve me walking around the site, collecting the necessary information, taking samples if required, and then generating a report of my findings. I will send the samples off to our laboratories for testing and depending on the results, I will recommend how we can manage the asbestos on site, or provide assistance in progressing any required remedial actions.


As well as asbestos surveys, I also conduct radon testing and fire risk assessments for clients


Talk me through a typical day?  As I am a mobile surveyor, I travel all around the country to conduct my surveys, so every day is varied in terms of the locations I’m in and the type of business I’m surveying. For example, one week I could be surveying the premises of a bank in Manchester and the next, I could be on an offshore rig.


Depending on the type of job we have on, also depends on the amount of time we’re there on site. So, I could have three surveys in one day, scheduled around the same area, or one survey which I will undertake over the course of two days.


How did you get your start in the industry?  I actually started my working career in manufacturing in the Motor Trade industry, so a world away from what I’m doing now. However my wife, Samantha, worked for an asbestos removal company, which is how I first got interested in working the industry. I started with her company, which is where I got my basic training. I worked there for five years before moving to Bureau Veritas, where I have happily been for five years.


What do you enjoy about working at Bureau Veritas?  No one day is the same working at Bureau Veritas, as I get to travel lots and meet a lot of different characters along the way, which is great and keeps the job interesting. Working for Bureau Veritas also offers me great flexibility. As I am a mobile surveyor, when I’m not on site, I work from home in Hull, filing the necessary paperwork and managing my accounts.


Another benefit of working at Bureau Veritas is the size of the organisation, which not only offers greater job security, but it also means that there are plenty of training opportunities. As there are regular changes to various regulations, it’s important we stay on top of these, so we have regular briefings to ensure we’re all up to date. That also means if I have any queries on site, I know I can get in touch with one of the team who will have an answer. As I work in different environments, such as on a rig, that means we also have to have the likes of survival training too, as you’re offshore. Essentially my knowledge is always increasing, which not only benefits me, it benefits our clients.
