Silica Dust

YOUR SILICA DUST COMPLIANCE PARTNER

Work operations involving stone, rock, concrete, brick, mortar, plaster and industrial sand can create a fine dust called silica dust, which is over 100 times smaller than the sand you would find on beaches.

For employees working in a number of sectors, including ceramics, foundries, sandblasting, tunnelling, brick making, mining and construction, exposure to this silica dust, otherwise known as Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS), can be extremely harmful. In fact, prolonged exposure can cause lung cancer and other serious respiratory diseases including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The Health & Safety Executive estimates this ‘slow motion killer’ is responsible for the death of up to 1,000 workers each year – the second biggest occupational cancer risk after asbestos.

RCS falls under The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) (as amended). Employers therefore have a duty to take appropriate measures to identify and mitigate the risk of exposure.

Reducing the risk of exposure

Bureau Veritas works closely with clients to undertake a comprehensive review of all potential sources of RCS exposure.

This can include identifying exposure groups, delivering employee training and education, evaluating mitigation strategies and developing control measures to keep RCS exposure levels below the defined Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL). These control measures must also be continuously reviewed to ensure they remain below the WEL.

With an expert team of experienced professionals and a wide range of sector experience, we are best placed to support clients in achieving and maintaining compliance.
