Biomass and Biofuels Sustainability Verification
Demonstrating the sustainability and legal compliance of biomass and biofuels
The European Union’s Directive 2009/28/EC on energy from renewable sources, has set specific requirements for the verification of biofuels and ensures their sustainability. To follow this new legislation, the sustainability of the biofuels will need to be verified and guaranteed to be distributed on the European market.
The sustainability of the biomass used for the production of the different types of biofuels can also be evaluated against requirements included in recognised voluntary certification schemes and through independent audits. Independent verification needs to cover all steps in the supply chain from the biomass producer to the final biofuels distributor.
