Career Story: Mark Tambini

09/08/17

I started my career after graduating from The University of Bath with a degree in Civil & Structural Engineering, and subsequently joined HCD Engineering, now Bureau Veritas, as a consulting design engineer in October 2005.

My role was originally split between civil and structural design as well managing a 3rd party peer review team for building control. This role gave me an insight into the other aspects of the company and I was particularly interested by the approved inspectors role, which offered the opportunity to gain a broader, holistic view of the construction industry whilst offering more client-facing opportunities and practical engagement on site. To develop, progress and enhance my knowledge of the construction industry I later joined the building control department.

Now, the core responsibility of my role is to administer all aspects of the approved inspector function, ensuring all projects are compliant with the building regulations. I am also involved in management aspects for our region, reviewing and assessing financial management tasks to monitor performance against targets and year end goals.

One of the unique benefits of working for a multi-disciplinary company is the opportunity to work closely with other professions, and the potential to diversify and broaden your technical knowledge on a daily basis.

Bureau Veritas offers a plethora of services and as such there are endless opportunities to liaise with colleagues on all manner of technical matters from fire engineering, acoustics and health and safety.

The training opportunities at Bureau Veritas are fantastic, with the company taking an active interest in allowing employees to reach their full potential through workshops and day courses.

Whilst being fairly new to Bureau Veritas (HCD Group were acquired by Bureau Veritas in 2016), it is encouraging to see the strong emphasis placed on key clients and cross selling of services, which leads to excellent client satisfaction as well strong internal relationships.

As with many roles within Bureau Veritas, every day is different.

We work across a broad range of sectors in building control and these include: healthcare, education, residential, workplace, leisure and retail. This means I can be inspecting a live construction site for student accommodation in Cardiff one day, and attending a design team meeting for a new school in London the next.

On one of my projects, the lead designer is based in the Netherlands, so a design team meeting in Amsterdam was a bit out of the ordinary but pretty exciting!

Building control is a very dynamic and varied industry and the variety of schemes is what keeps my work interesting.

Lessons learned since graduating from University

Your studies are very important and often a key stepping stone in a career path, however you are not necessarily tied to one job for the rest of your life.

Being fortunate enough to work for a company such as Bureau Veritas, there are always opportunities to up-skill and develop, and move your career in the direction you wish it to go. You will find that most of the skills you learn at University are transferrable - I didn’t know building control existed when I first started out!

Our clients keep the business moving forward

Over the years I have learned how important it is to add your personal touch where suitable and possible; many clients like to know they are being looked after professionally and really appreciate knowing they have someone who values their business.
